What is Sciatica Ayurvedic treatment

Sciatica refers to the typical pain, weakness and numbness in leg that is that may affect movements. This pain typically travels alongside the path of the nerve called sciatic nerve and hence the name of the condition. This leads to pain in the lower back that travels to the hips then goes down the leg. Sciatica usually affects only one side of the body.1

As per Ayurveda, Sciatica is homologous to the condition called as Gridhrasi. It is considered to be a type of Vata-vyadhi that is caused by underlying aggravation of the Vata Dosha. The pain of gridhrasi is classically defined as a stinging or a numbing pain that travels across the lower back and buttocks to the thigh, and then to leg in any one leg.2 According to Charaka, Stambha, Ruka, Toda, and Spandana are the signs and symptoms of Vataja Gridhrasi.3
