Causes of CELLULITIS

The most common causes of cellulitis are Staphylococcus and streptococcus bacterial infection.

  • A crack or a break in the skin, due to recent surgery, cuts, puncture wounds, an ulcer, athlete's foot or dermatitis, allows the bacteria to enter the skin.
  • Bacteria can also enter through areas of dry, flaky or swollen skin.
  • Lower leg is the most common location for cellulitis.
  • Certain types of insect or spider bites also can transfer the bacteria.

Risk factors for cellulitis include:

  • Cracks or peeling skin amid the toes
  • History of peripheral vascular disease
  • Injury or trauma to the skin
  • Insect bites and stings, animal bites, or human bites
  • from certain diseases like diabetes
  • Immune suppressing medications like corticosteroids
  • Surgery induced wound
