Causes of KELOID

Keloids are generally observed during or after puberty between the ages of 10 and 30 years. Keloids are caused due to abnormal wound healing, resulting in excessive scar formation that extends beyond the region of the original wound.[i],[ii],[iii]

  • Keloids can occur immediately after trauma or inflammation (as early as 1 to 3 months), or grow months (up to a year) after a mature, firm scar has formed.
  • Trauma can vary from vaccination needle sticks, cuts, bug bites, and burns, to dermatologic conditions such as acne or folliculitis.
  • Keloids tend to have a genetic component.

Most skin injury types that can result in keloids include: 7

  • Acne scars
  • Burns
  • Chickenpox scars
  • Ear piercing
  • Scratches
  • Surgical incision sites
  • Vaccination sites
