Causes of ACNE

Hormonal changes

Androgens are hormones that increase in boys and girls during puberty and cause the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum (oily substance that lubricates skin). Excess sebum gets trapped in the hair follicles along with dead skin and form a soft plug.

Sometimes, clogged pores become infected with bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) which may result in inflammation. Depending on the degree of infection, acne can be mild or severe.

Scientific studies suggest that acne gets worse when we are stressed. Genetic factors and the immune system also play a role in development of acne

Other exogenous substances

Tars, chlorinated hydrocarbons, oily cosmetics, corticosteroids, lithium can also cause acne.

In Ayurveda, all the samhitas have pointed out kapha, vata, and rakta as the causative factor of the disease. In Sharangadhara Samhita, vakrasnigdhata and pidika have been mentioned as due to shukradhatumala while Bhavaprakasa mentioned due to svabhava.2 Diet, lifestyle and state of mind can also cause acne. Consumption of oily, spicy, fatty, fast food, cold drinks causes the disturbance of Tridoshas. Exertion immediately after meal, anger, stress and poor sleep patterns aggravate acne.5
