Boils and Carbuncles Symptoms

Symptoms of BOILS AND CARBUNCLES

Boils can appear anywhere on the skin, but are generally found on the face, neck, armpits, buttocks or thighs (hair-containing areas most likely to sweat or have friction).

Signs and symptoms of a boil usually include:

  • A painful, red bump about the size of a pea
  • Red, swollen skin around the bump
  • An increase in the size of the bump over a few days due to pus (can sometimes reach the size of a baseball)
  • Development of a yellow-white tip that eventually ruptures and allows the pus to drain out

Carbuncles often occur on the back of the neck, shoulders or thighs, result in fever and chill and a general feeling of illness. Carbuncles result in deeper and more severe infection, and generally leave a scar.
