Diagnosis of FUNGAL SKIN INFECTION -TINEA

  • Your Doctor may diagnose the condition by Inspection of the affected site. Some of the common tests used to diagnose Tinea infections include
  • Microscopic examination of skin and nail specimens which may reveal hyphae and fungal spores.
  • Fungal culture can identify the exact species but is not always reliable and it can take six weeks to obtain results.
  • Ultraviolet light (Wood's light) is useful for identifying scalp ringworm especially. Fluorescence is produced by the fungus. Fluorescence is not seen with fungi that cause Athelete’s foot or Jock Itch.
  • Rarely, a biopsy may be needed if the case is atypical or not responding to treatment
