Intertigo Causes

The most common causes of Intertrigo are mechanical factors and secondary infection.[i],[ii]

  • Rubbing of opposing skin surfaces against each other results in erosions and break down of the skin making it inflamed.
  • Broken skin facilitates yeast and bacterial infection.
  • Intertrigo is worsened by sweat, feces, urine, and vaginal discharge.

Ayurveda describes Intertrigo as Kachhu / Vrushana Kachchu, as a asthanika twak gata vikara explained in kshudra roga.[iii]

The risk of Intertrigo increases in:[iv]

  • Obese individuals
  • Individuals with diabetes
  • Individuals with a splint, brace, or artificial limb
  • People exposed to high heat and humidity
  • Individuals who have incontinence, excessivesweating
  • Individuals with suppressed immune system due to chemotherapy or HIV

Infants are also at a greater risk of Intertrigo due to their chubbiness, shorter necks and flexed posture.

The predisposing factors for Kachchu include Snana uthsadana hinatha which result in itching in the genital region. Scratching of the affected area is an expression of sphota and srava resulting from Kapha and Rakta prakopa.4
