Causes of MELASMA

Melasma is generally observed in women of childbearing age, during or post- pregnancy, after menopause, or due to long-term use of birth control pills. When melasma appears in pregnant women, it is called chloasma.1

The various causes of melasma are:1

  • Female gender
  • Hereditary (someone in family with melasma)
  • Exposure to UV rays
  • Hormonal imbalance and Irregular menstruation
  • Fair complexion
  • Stress

Ayurveda believes that Neelika and Vyanga occurs due to excess of Vata, Pitta followed by Rakta Dosha.3 Stress associated with psychological factors such as Krodha (anger), Shoka (grief), and Harsha (happiness) may also be responsible for Vyanga.1 Sushruta Samhita describes that Vayu provoked by anger and exertion along with Pitta, reaching the face abruptly produces circular, painless, small and blackish patches.4
