Ayurvedic Treatment for Nail infections

NAIL INFECTIONS Ayurvedic Treatment

  • Physical examination of the nail to determine the clinical appearance and evaluating the patient’s history will help differentiate fungal from non-fungal nail infections.
  • Certain other conditions like psoriasis can mimic fungal nail infection; the doctor may scrape some debris from under the nail for laboratory examination including direct microscopy and fungal culture, so as to determine the exact microorganism responsible for the infection.

Diet Recommendations (Aahar)

  • A Pitta and Kapha balancing diet should be followed.
  • Overly hot, spicy or sour foods, including red meat, alcohol and tobacco should be avoided.
  • Sweet, juicy seasonal fruits such as peaches, figs and berries should be included in the diet.
  • Excessively oily, salty, sour, fermented or pungent foods and spices such as chillies, alcohol, pickles, vinegar, hard or pungent cheeses, citrus fruits, sour cream, yoghurt, tomatoes, garlic, onions and chillies should be avoided as they will worsen the acid and pitta in the intestines and blood.

Lifestyle changes (Vihar)

  • Exercise helps in burning the ama, and increases circulation and metabolism
  • Vaman Dhouti or yogic vomiting balances Pitta by relieving the stomach of symptoms like heart burn and acid reflux.
  • Meditation, cooling forms of pranayama and gentle yoga postures should be practised.
