  • Diagnosis of shingles is generally based on the history of pain on one side of the body, as well as significant rash and blisters.

Diet Recommendations (Aahar)

  • Oily, salty, sour, fermented or pungent foods and spices, sour cream, yoghurt, tomatoes, garlic, onions and chillies worsen the acid and pitta in the intestines and blood; hence, should be avoided.
  • Warm or cool and energizing foods with sweet, bitter and astringent taste (asparagus, lettuce, broccoli, cucumber, raita, mung dhal, summer squashes, courgettes, cilantro, coconut, cucumber, lime and green salads) should be included in the diet. 8
  • Avoid very heat generating substances like red meat, alcohol and tobacco.
  • Avoid excessive fasting; do not skip meals (specifically lunch).

Lifestyle changes (Vihar)

  • Perform moderate exercises (short runs or swims) in a cool climate.
  • Walk regularly especially by the sea.
  • Avoid extended exercise in very hot climates or environments.
  • Hatha yoga shatkarmas like nauli and neti, surya namaskara and pranayama may also beneficial.
