Diabetes and atherosclerosis Diagnosis

Diagnosis of DIABETES AND ATHEROSCLEROSIS

Atherosclerosis is diagnosed based on medical and family history, physical exams and a few specialised exams:

  • Physical exam: The doctor may listen to your arteries for an abnormal whooshing sound which is produced due to a plaque build-up in that area or he may check your pulse for weakness indicating any blocked artery.
  • Blood tests: These check the levels of certain fats, cholesterol, sugar, and proteins in your blood. Abnormal levels may indicate that you're at risk for atherosclerosis.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) test: A simple, painless test that evaluates the heart's electrical activity that can detect any irregular heart beat or heart damage.
  • Chest X-ray: A chest X ray takes images of the organs, blood vessels and structures inside your chest, such as your heart, lungs etc. A chest x ray can show signs of heart failure.
  • Stress test: During a stress test, one has to exercise to put stress on the heart and make it beat fast while the heart tests are done. The test can show possible signs and symptoms of heart failure.
