Causes of DIABETES AND FOOT PROBLEMS

Nerve damage

Excess sugar in the blood damages nerves, which in turn, either stop sending signals or send signals too slowly to different parts of the body. This may make you lose feeling in your feet and in case you injure yourself or get blisters, you may not even realise it. This makes your infections worse. Sometimes, the extra sugar also goes and feeds on your injuries, making the infection worse.1

Poor blood flow

Excess sugar leads to poor blood flow to your legs and feet. In case you get an infection, the lack of proper blood flow prolongs your healing. In some cases, infections never heal making those areas of feet black and smelly.3

According to Ayurveda, impaired metabolism causes imbalance of vata, pitta and kapha dosha causing complications from diabetes such as foot problems.1As such, diabetes is caused due to different diet or ahara practices, along with lifestyle or vihara habits including:2,3

  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Excessive sleep
  • Excessive intake of sweet, sugary, difficult to digest and cold foods, and raw grains
  • Regular consumption of seafood and meat
  • Regular consumption of beer, sugarcane juice and milk products
