Diabetes in elderly-old people Causes

In people with diabetes, the cells of the body fail to respond correctly to the hormone insulin. Insulin’s role is to move the sugar from blood into cells, where it is stored and later used for energy. Lack of insulin causes high blood sugar and diabetes.  Family history, hereditary factors, poor diet, low activity levels and excess body weight around the waist in old age increase the chances of developing diabetes.2

According to Ayurveda, diabetes may be hereditary and passed on by a diabetic family member. Also, life-long exposure to different diet or ahara practices, along with lifestyle or vihara habits may lead to diabetes and related complications in old age. These include:4

  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Excessive sleep
  • Excessive intake of sweets and oily foods
  • Regular consumption of seafood and meat
  • Regular consumption of beer, sugarcane juice and milk products
