CONSTIPATION Meaning

Constipation in adults refers to a condition in which there are fewer than three motions in a week or there are hard stoolswhic cause pain and difficulty in passing.¹

Many people don’t have a bowel movement every day, this is not necessarily constipation. Different people can have different patterns of passing motions.¹

Constipation generally occurs for a short time and may not be serious. With some modifications, one can prevent or relieve constipation.¹

Constipation is explained in Ayurvedic literature as an independent condition as well as a symptom of many underlying diseases. The terms commonly used for constipation in Ayurvedic texts are Vibandha (Slow movement of motions), Malavrodha (Obstruction of motions) and Vittasanga (Immobility of the feces).²
