DIARRHEA Meaning

Diarrhea refers to passing of loose, watery stools for more than three or more times a day. If the condition lasts for 1 or 2 days it is termed as acute diarrhea.1

If diarrhea lasts for more than 2 days, it may indicate a more serious problem. Chronic diarrhea is a diarrhea that lasts for at least 4 weeks and may be continues or symptoms may come and go with a break in between.1

Any type of diarrhea is known to cause dehydration, leading to loss of fluid and important electrolytes in the body.1

The symptoms of diarrhea are described under the condition called as Atisaar in Ayurveda. Atisara (diarrhea) comprises of two words ati and saranam. Ati means excess and saranam refers to gati or flow. Therefore, Atisara (diarrhea) is a condition where watery stools are passed in excess, several times a day.2

Atisara (diarrhea) is considered as a very common problem, arising out of irregular and unhealthy habits pertaining to diet (ahara) and lifestyle (vihara). Although Atisara (diarrhea) may rarely be dangerous, it can be troublesome and cause agony.2
