DIARRHEA Ayurvedic Treatment

For diarrhea lasting less than 2 days tests are not necessary. But if diarrhea lasts longer, following tests may be required.1,2

  • Medical history and physical examination: To check for signs of illness.
  • Stool culture: To check for bacteria, parasites, or other signs of disease and infection.
  • Blood tests: To help rule out certain diseases.
  • Fasting tests: To check if a food intolerance or allergy is the cause for diarrhea.
  • Colonoscopy: To look at the inside of the entire colon for any deformity or other problems.

Diet Recommendations (Aahar)

  • Eat only when hungry and have a light diet
  • Initially, have light food along with butter-milk, Kanji (a thin soup made with split mung beans or brown rice), Yavagu (thick cereal such as oat, wheat, rice or rye flour boiled in water) and Tarpana (Roasted flour of cereals mixed with water)3
  • Later, you can have more Yavagu (thick cereal such as oat, wheat, rice or rye flour boiled in water), Vilepi (a thicker version of Yavagu), Khada (a sour appetizer), Yusha (vegetable soup) and boiled rice that is mixed with meat soup which is prepared by adding digestion improving herbs.3

  • Adequate rest is advised
  • Care should be taken to preserve energy and hydration3
