Diverticulitis is generally diagnosed by an acute pain attack in the abdomen. Doctor generally do a physical examination and ask for some tests to find out the exact cause of the pain. ¹

Common tests that are requested by doctors are: ¹

• Blood and urine tests, to check for signs of infection.
• Pregnancy test, to rule out pain due to pregnancy.
• Liver function tests, to rule out liver related causes of pain.
• Testing the stools, to rule out infection in people who have diarrhea.
• CT scan, which can indicate inflamed or infected pouches and confirm a diagnosis of diverticulitis. CT can also indicate the severity of diverticulitis and guide treatment.
