Your doctor will examine the child and ask about his stool and related behaviour. There may not be any further tests required to diagnose the condition unless there is some complication of long term constipation in child.

Diet Recommendations (Aahar)

Dietary factors that may play a part in constipation. Some of the do’s and don’ts of diet include –

  • Increase intake of fluids help to improve bowel movements
  • Give wholesome food like: Fruit, vegetables, cereals and wholemeal bread
  • Dried (or semi-dried) apricots or raisins for snacks are a good option to raise fibres in diet
  • A glass of hot milk with a teaspoon of clarified butter at bedtime or a glass of boiled water with one teaspoon of flax seed helps ease constipation
  • Increase fruits like pears, guavas, orange, papaya, figs and vegetables such as spinach in diet
  • Include fibres in diet.
  • Avoid banana and jack fruit

Lifestyle changes (Vihar)

Some of the problems leading to constipation are deeper than diet. These include –

  • Teach him to not suppress or hold on the stools. Create a regular time for your child to empty bowels
  • Emotional issues can also lead to constipation in children. For e.g. a recent change in residence or when starting nursery schooling for your kid. Reassuring and giving more time to child can help.  
  • Allowing the child plenty of time and privacy so that they not feel rushed.
  • Do not pressurize a child to empty bowel. Stress increases risk of constipation.
