DELAYED PUBERTY Meaning

Delayed puberty refers to the delay in sexual maturation or appearance of secondary sexual characteristics in boys and girls at adolescence. This is not always a serious problem as many adolescents may show delayed development than their peers, but if the reasons behind the delay are some underlying medical problems - this may need to medical attention.1

Boys can start puberty between the ages of 9 and 15. A delayed puberty in boys may be considered when it has not started by age 14.

As per Ayurveda, an imbalance of the tridosha (vata, pitta and kapha), especially vata and manas may be responsible for the retardation of growth. It may also be due to causative factors at birth. A high dominance of tamasa guna or any abnormality of bija (Seed - ovum or sperm), bijabhaga or bijabhaga avayava (genetics) can be responsible for delay in puberty.2
