DEPRESSION IN MEN Meaning

Depression is a state of mind that affects someone’s way of thinking, reacting to a situation and living life. Almost everyone may  suffer from depression at various stages in life and It is estimated that up to 5.8% Indian men suffer from depression every year.2 However, it is not something to be ignored.1  If the depressive symptoms last for at least 2 weeks or more, it is considered to be clinically relevant.1

Depression is termed as ‘Vishaada’ in Ayurvedic texts. Vishaada refers to mental lethargy or inactivity because of a fear of failure. This lethargy is seen in day to day life and causes a feeling of sorrow. Another term used in Ayurveda for this is Glani (mental despair).3

Unhealthy dietary habits such as Adhvashana (improper foods) and Vishamashana (eating combination of foods that are conflicting in nature) may cause Vishada (mental lethargy) resulting out of Pragya-paradha (mistakes of the intellect/mind).3 The concept of psychosomatic disorders or diseases that affect both the body and mind is well documented in the ancient science of Ayurveda.4
