Management of any underlying cause of oligospermia is needed. This may involve a surgery to correct any tube blockage, varicocele and medication for hormonal disorders. 1

The Vajikaran or Vrishya therapies are a clinical specialty of Ayurveda that play an important role in maintaining the sexual health and management of conditions related to sexual dysfunction. Ayurveda recommends Vajikarana chikitsa for men to become endowed with physique, potency, strength, and complexion and be sexually exhilarated and remain potent.3

Apart from that, Vrsya diet (ahar) and lifestyle changes (vihar) are too described to the condition effectively. These include:

Diet Recommendations (Aahar)

  • Consume nutritious food such as milk, clarified butter,  eggs, poultry, fresh fruits, nuts, cereals and vegetables
  • Increase uptake of foods and fruits high in lycopene such as tomatoes, cherries, melons etc may be beneficial
  • Foods rich in Vitamin-C such as citrus fruits (lemons, oranges etc) may be used
  • Madhur rasa (sweet) and guru ahara (heavy) is recommended (Like Ghee, oils, fats, etc).
  • Avoid foods that cause indigestion, excess salt, alcohol and astringent foods

Lifestyle changes (Vihar)

  • Follow a systematic daily way of life (Dincharya) that includes appropriate sleeping and waking patterns, good quality and time for sleep, sexual activities, and exercises
  • Avoid activities that lead to stress
  • Avoid performing excessive exercises
  • Avoid suppression of urges (vegavidharan)

As a regular practice, sit in cold water ensuring the testicles are dipped in water for 15-20 minutes every day. This helps lower the testicular temperature and facilitates sperm production.
