ADULT - ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER -ADHD Meaning

Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is comparatively a rare but disruptive disorder. It creates a combination of problems like lack of attention, hyper-activity and thoughtless actions by the adult. It causes problems in relationships, problems at work and psychological issues.1

Although ADHD begin in childhood, it may continue in adults and may never be diagnosed initially. Not all symptoms are visible in adults but some such as thoughtless actions, unrest and lack of attention are seen. 1

In Ayurveda, there are scattered references about many abnormal behaviors which are discussed under features of vataprakriti anavasthita chittatva mano vibhrama (restlessness due to vata vitiation), Buddhi vibhrama, Smriti vibhrama, Sheela vibhrama, Cheshta vibrama, and Achara vibhrama (all meaning impairment of right mental faculties) can be correlated with ADHD.2

According to Ayurveda, the causative factor for ADHD is vitiation of dhee (rational thinking), dhriti (retaining power of the mind), smriti (memory), each leading to abnormal conduct. This causes lack of attention, hyper-activity and thoughtless actions.2

As per Ayurveda, Prana Vata, which governs the brain, sensory perception, and the mind; and Sadhaka Pitta, which is responsible for thoughts and working of heart - are implicated in etiology of this condition.2
