CHILDREN-ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER -ADHD Meaning

The condition known as ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) refers to a collection of some behavioral conditions which include lack of attention, hyper-activity and thoughtless actions.1

ADHD is usually seen at a younger age in children and become more pronounced in school goers. Most of the times, children between 6-12 years of age are diagnosed with ADHD.1

While ADHD may improve as age progresses, some adults may continue to have issues such as sleep problems and anxiety.1

In Ayurveda, ADHD does not have an analogous term but many abnormal behaviors are discussed under features of vataprakriti anavasthita chittatva mano vibhrama (restlessness due to vata vistiation), Buddhi vibhrama, Smriti vibhrama, Sheela vibhrama, Cheshta vibrama, and Achara vibhrama (all meaning impairment of right mental faculties) can be correlated with ADHD.3

According to Ayurveda, the main reason for ADHD is vitiation of dhee (rational thinking), dhriti (retaining power of the mind), smriti (memory) leading to abnormal conduct. This causesack of attention, hyper-activity and thoughtless actions.3

As per Ayurveda, Prana Vata, which governs the brain, sensory perception, and the mind; and Sadhaka Pitta, which is responsible for thoughts and working of heart -are implicated in etiology of this condition.3
