Diagnosis of dysarthria is based on the visible symptoms. The type of dysarthria can be evaluated by a speech-language pathologist .¹

Apart from a physical exam, other tests may be needed, which incliude:¹

• Imaging tests: An MRI or CT scan can help to find out any structural cause of the speech problem.
• Brain and nerve studies: These evaluate the activity in nerves for transmission of messages
• Blood, urine, CSF and biopsy tests: These help to determine if an infectious or inflammatory disease is causing the symptoms.
• Lumbar puncture (spinal tap): Lumbar puncture is done to identify any serious infections in the brain or spinal cord

Diet Recommendations (Aahar)

• A wholesome healthy diet should be adhered to for mental health and happiness.
• A specific herb called Vacha (Acorus calamus) has shown speech enhancing properties.
• Additionally, certain herbs belonging to the class of Medhya drugs such as Mandukaparni (Centella asiatica), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Jatamansi (Nordostachys jatamansi) and especially Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) should be used often as a part of diet and lifestyle.⁴

Lifestyle changes (Vihar)

• Achar rasayan (Good behavior and lifestyle) influences the Pravar Satva (Higher mental equilibrium).³
• Supportive speech therapy with a specialist is recommended.²
