Acidity in pregnancy Causes

Causes of ACIDITY IN PREGNANCY

There is a valve between the stomach and the food pipe (esophagus). It prevents the backflow of the stomach acids into the food pipe or esophagus.

When this valve is unable to prevent stomach acid from going into food pipe (esophagus), it causes heartburn. It is seen that during pregnancy increase in levels of progesterone hormone causes the valves to relax, it leads to increased stomach acid passing into esophagus and causing heartburn.

During pregnancy heartburn or acidity may be seen during the first trimester as well as more commonly during the third trimester. It is more common in the third trimester because the growing uterus puts pressure on the intestines and the stomach. The pressure on the stomach may also push acidic contents of the stomach back up into the esophagus.
