DEHYDRATION IN PREGNANCY Ayurvedic Tips

Diagnosis of dehydration during pregnancy is made solely based on history and physical examination. Management includes reinstitution of the lost fluids and electrolytes. In mild to moderate dehydration, oral fluids including drinking water and oral rehydration solution (ORS) may be sufficient to correct the fluid and electrolyte loss. In severe cases however treatment includes intravenous fluids.

Diet Recommendations (Aahar)

  • Take plenty of water every day.
  • Common recommendation is to take at least eight to 12 glasses daily.
  • Fluids such as coconut water are recommended as they are rich in nutrients as well as maintain hydration.
  • In women with morning sickness plenty of fluids are to be taken when there is no nausea.
  • Caffeine should be avoided because it increases the need to urinate and leads to further fluid loss.
  • Water is ideal, but other fluids that can be taken include milk, natural fruit juices, and soup.

Lifestyle changes (Vihar)

Lifestyle changes recommended to prevent dehydration during pregnancy include

  • Regular exercise but ensuring that exercise is moderate and the woman is adequately hydrated to prevent excessive sweating and fluid loss.
  • Staying indoors/ in cool surroundings/ avoiding sun bathing
