Causes of DEHYDRATION IN PREGNANCY

Dehydration occurs when the body is losing water more quickly than one can take it and other fluids in. The result is that the body struggles to go about normal functions. Water is used to form the placenta, which passes nutrients to the baby in the womb. If there is dehydration several problems can occur in the baby including –

  • Low amniotic fluid
  • Premature labour
  • Poor production of breast milk
  • Damage to the spine and neural tube development of the baby
  • Birth defects

Some of the common causes of dehydration in pregnancy include –

  • Excessive vomiting during the first trimester of pregnancy. Vomiting can lead to a lack of fluids and electrolytes, plus the loss of stomach acid.
  • Vigorous exercise leading to excessive sweating
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • High fever
  • Not drinking adequate water
