Ayurveda as well as western medicine advises a healthy diet plan during pregnancy especially during this period of the pregnancy. Some of the suggestions for diet include –

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Liquid nourishment should be emphasized upon including warm herbal infusions, warm milks, and water
  • Ayurvedic texts recommend eating good amounts of rice, milk, butter, ghee and curd, fruits that are orange and yellow, and leafy greens
  • Diet pacifying the pitta is usually recommended.

Lifestyle changes (Vihar)

Ayurvedic lifestyle tips during pregnancy include –

  • Avoiding too much and too intense exercise but maintain regular yoga and moderate exercise
  • Long periods of travel with long periods of sitting in an aeroplane or car should be avoided
  • General massage with a trained practitioner or gentle abhyanga is a beneficial practice
  • Prenatal Yoga is advised for relaxation as well as ensuring fitness. Deep breathing and/or pranayama including gentle alternate nostril breathing is also advised.
