Ayurvedic Tips for Premenstrual syndrome -PMS-

In most women lifestyle changes are enough to combat PMS. However when the symptoms are disabling a visit to the doctor may be necessart. There are no tests to diagnose this condition specifically. Your doctor will look at your symptoms and rule out your underlying diseases like depression or anxiety.

Diet Recommendations (Aahar)

  • Consume smaller meals (5-6 meals per day) to ease the bloating
  • Reduce salt and water intake to avoid water retention and bloating
  • Include adequate fruits, vegetables and whole grains that have higher levels of complex carbohydrates (whole-grain cereals, barley, brown rice, and beans).
  • Increase intake of calcium rich foods such as milk products.
  • Include soothing teas as a part of your daily regime. These include teas with orange, fennel, ginger, lemon and cloves
  • Avoide caffeine and alcohol.

Lifestyle changes (Vihar)

  • Exercise regularly for at least 30 minutes every day. Exercises such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming or other vigorous physical activities can help ease both tiredness and depression. However, moderate exercise may be undertaken during the periods.
  • Get enough sleep to remain stress free
  • Regularly indulge in tension relieving exercises such as pranayama (deep breathing), muscle relaxation work-outs and yogasanas.
  • Massage with sesame seed oil and other relaxing methods can be used to further ease the stress.
